San Diego Zoo

by TempNomad - last update: Mar 2, 2005

We were lucky enough to see the Asian and African elephants playing. Apparently, it is an unusual sight (we were eavesdropping on the tour guide), but I don't know if he says that to make the visitors feel special. (No, I'm not cynical at all!)
I don't know if you can see it, but the two elephants are playing. The one on the right has tusks, and we were all afraid they would poke the other elephant in the eye. They were very cute together, however.
This little bird has the biggest silver feet! He was very cute.
In the aviaries (there are several) you can really get up close and personal. The birds are so beautiful and not too skittish. It's a lovely, high, green place for them to be seen.
We saw these three monkeys badgering this orangutan. It was very funny, but I felt kind of bad of the orangutan. One would push or pinch him and then the other would be there to annoy him when he moved away. After a while, I got the feeling he liked it because he could easily have pounced on one or just left. Very funny.
This orangutan had a piece of brown paper that he carried around with him. He eventually put it on his head and sat watching the action in the habitat.
This panda was chomping away the whole time we watched him. The other panda had the hiccups, so I didn't take a photo. I didn't want to intrude on his private time. :)
This zebra was running around a bit, but we finally got him to stand still.
