The Gates was a temporary work of art designed for and displayed within Central Park for 2 weeks. I took these photos on February 27, 2005, the day before it was to be dismantled. The inspiration for the piece was the lack of formal gates at the entrances to the park. While it is surrounded by a stone wall, each of the entrances, referred to as a gate, is open all day and all night.
As you can imagine, it was quite a struggle to gain the approval to erect 23 miles of gates throughout Central Park and you can learn more on Christo and Jeanne-Claude's web site below.

The Gates have proven to be a fairly controversial work of art in New York....take a look at my photos and you can make your own decision about whether you think it is a worthy art form or not....I would love to hear what you think... |
