We wake to the gentle sound of the waves. They come up close, almost touching our tent, but not being able to reach it, frustrated, they retreat back to the ocean. We pitched our tent just beyond the high tide line. We emerge to greet the ocean, the new day, and the new country.
This island seems to be not only a paradise of beautiful, white sand beaches and clear ocean water, but also great for hitchhiking. It works here almost as well as in Taiwan. Almost – because most of the time, we actually do have to wait for a few minutes. The only problem our drivers seem to have is that we can’t supply a simple answer to the straightforward question: “Where are you going?” They can’t grasp the concept of just going, to no particular place, just around the island; and keep asking for a destination, or a ‘target.’ If we mention a name of some place, their face brightens, and they usually say: “O.K. No problem” – and drive us directly there.
