our Scandi Trip part 2

by Kiwigirlie - last update: Jan 22, 2006

Had so many photos - I had to keep going!

Leivek Sunset
Leivek was a beautiful little place south of Bergen. The campground was tiny, discreet and hidden away in a little cove. Wonderful place!
Only a short walk into the town to grocerys, ferries etc!
With a bottle of wine, some saugage... Arh...

Norheimsund & Hardangerfjorden

We reluctantly left Leivek and travelled on, crossing over a few islands and finally getting to Norheimsund. Our tent had finally spat the dummie and two poles had broken so we decided to hire a little cabin instead of trying to fix it. we only had two nights left in Norway so we figured we live it up a little. Norheimsund is where the local boy racers all hang out! Cos all night there was tires squeelling, burns out and horns blowing... YAH!
But the place was pretty picturesque. Back onto the tourist trail though which was a bit annoying... The picture is the view from our cabin - pretty nice eh?
Austin outside our cabin

Sometimes a cabin beats a tent!!!

This was our little home from home. It had everything we needed, except running water... But that was ok!
They are a little more expensive than a tent site but when your poles are broken and your tent is threatening to really give out on you. These are a life saver!! We loved it!
Glacial Road from Jondal to Folgefonna Glacier

Folgefonna Glacier

We spent the next day driving south again and catching a ferry to Jondal. Then up a very steep, narrow and twisty road up to Folgefonna Glacier. I really recommend going up here! It's will take about 50 mins but it's worth it. Especially in the summer as there is summer skiing on the glacier! We were really inpressed and it was breathtakingly beautiful!
Watch out for the cracks!

Folgefonna Glacier & Austin!

If you look carefully you'll see a little spec of a person right near the base of the ice... Well that's Austin!

On top of the world

Well not quite - but I do love this picture. We are right on the edge of a ledge and below us is nothing! And yes even though it was summer it was about 4 degrees up there - with a wind chill of -4, coming straight off the glacier!
Summer Skiing! Wonderful stuff!
I would've loved to have been able to get the skis on and go up on the glacier but it was very expensive and I didn't have the right clothes... It was fun watching everyone though and there were a few kids who were just plain daredevils or showing off - one of the two...
Midnight Bergen - any one a Dustin Hoffman fan?

Last leg...

Finally we said goodbye to Hardangerfjorden and headed north up to Bergen. We arrived at about lunch time and headed straight to the tourist office. They arranged for us to stay at a homestay and our host Inga was excellent. Bergen itself is a lovely town. It's very walker friendly!! And we walked everywhere! I couldn't believe we had gone so far around Norway and Sweden (& briefly into Denmark) and it had only been two weeks. We certainly packed it all in! I didn't really want to leave Norway. It was like coming home to New Zealand and having that same scenery and friendlyness. The lifestyle and culture that revolves around the sea. We loved it here and it's now become one of our favourite holidays.
