Martial Arts album

by Katmosphere - last update: Jul 27, 2006

we have to practice these to do our kicks
I know that martial arts have nothing to do with traveling, but maybe there are some other VT'ers out there who enjoy it as much as I do...Please let me know!!
I got my 2nd degree black belt in 2003, I've been practicing for 12 yrs. now and I don't know how the time went so quickly.
This is my Sensai, another student and myself. (they needed a female black belt for the pic and I was the only one around that day)
We practice a style of karate called Goja Ryu, and my favorite part of it right now is weapons. I have a few pairs of custom made nunchucks, a beautiful sword, a bow, tonfas and sais.
All of the weapons that we use have really interesting origins from Okinawa. Except for the sword, they all started out as farming tools. It is believed that the bow was used to carry buckets of water on peoples shoulders, the nunchucks were used in the rice paddys, the sai was used to plant seeds and the tonfa was used as a handle on a well. They all evolved into these really "handy" weapons.
Sensai Alfredo--1953-2006

a sad day

Today, July 27, my Sensai died in Miami. He was a remarkable man. He taught us so much more than karate and he was a true friend.
One final bow, may you rest in peace.
