"One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain..." (Trenchtown Rock) Bob Marley is the greatest reggae artist there has ever been and there ever will be. He made music with a feeling, a soul and a message. He made music hit you. If there is a heaven, I hope to see him perform there one day.
"Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds" (Redemption Song) "Wisdom is better then silver and gold" (Zion Train) "Destruction of the soul is vanity" (Stiff Necked Fools) "Until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior, Is finally and permanently descredited and abandoned, Until there are no longer first class and second class citizens of any nation, Until the colour of a mans skin, is of no more significance then the colour of his eyes, Until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, without regard to race,
Until that day, the dream of lasting peace, world citizenship and the rule of international morality, Will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be persued, but never attained, Until the ignoble and unhappy regime that hold our brothers in Angola, In Mozambique, South Africa, in sub-human bondage, have been toppled, utterly destroyed,
Until that day the African continent will not know peace, We africans will fight, we find it necessary, And we know we shall win, as we are confident, In the victory, of good over evil, good over evil." (War) "One bright morning when my work is over, I will fly away home" (Rastaman Chant)
And so he did... |
Steel Pulse This British Reggae band, coming from Birmingham, is one of the few respected European bands in Jamaica. They perform swinging music with true lyrics.
"Marcus say, sir Marcus say, Red for the blood, that flowed like the river. Marcus say, sir Marcus say, Green for the land Africa. Marcus say, Yellow for the gold that they stole. Marcus say, Black for the people it was looted from." (Worth His Weight In Gold) |
Alpha Blondy Alpha Blondy, born in Ivory Coast, is one of the biggest reggae artists coming from Africa. He sings about tolerance between the different races and religions, coming out of a mixed marriage. He sings in African languages, French and English.
"Pour un oui, pour un non, Tu cours chercher ta Kalachnikov, Quand tu s?mes ta haine, Tu r?coltes la Kalachnikov Love." (Kalachnikov Love) "You can see christians, jews and muslims, Living together and praying, Amen, let?s give thanks and praises." (J?rusalem) |
UB40 Another reggaeband coming from Birmingham, UK. They make a more poppish kind of reggae for a bigger audience, with lyrics about racism, worklessness and other social problems. "I am a one in ten, a number on a list, I am a one in ten, even though i don't exist. Nobody knows me, but im always there, A statistic a reminder of a world that doesn't care." (One In Ten) "I'm not begging charity, don't confuse the things I say, Give me what belongs to me, give me what belongs to me" (Sorry) |
Israel Vibration This reggaeband was founded by two poliopatients, Wiss and Skelly, who had a hard life in Jamaica. In reggaemusic they found their comfort, and after more then 20 years they still have success. "A friend in need is a friend indeed." (Brother?s Keeper) "The stone that the builder refuse, Shall be the head cornerstone." (Ambush) "Shower them with power." (Border Line) |
Eek-a-Mouse Don't expect deep, touching lyrics when listening to this man, but do expect a cacaphony of vocals. Eek is just as much of a comedian as a singer, with a very own style and a hell of a personality. "In my mind, I really am insane, sometimes I don't even know my name. Am I me, am I you, take me to an institute, I am a freak, I am a freak, I am a freak." (The Freak) |
Amadou & Mariam Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia are two Malinese artists that got to know eachother in an institute for blind people. Unless the fact that they can't see, they make a wonderful sound that can be described as a mixture of African blues and European pop. Together with another big idol of mine, Manu Chao, they recorded the album Dimanche a Bamako, that became a worldwide success.
"Il est minuit a Tokio, Il est cinq heures au Mali, Quelle heure est-il a paradis?" (Senegal Fast Food) |
Youssou N'Dour This man is a true ambassador of the African people. He opens the eyes of the Western world and brings hope and inspiration to his people.
In 2004 Youssou N'Dour has been awarded with the Unesco music-award for his efforts to music and the relations between races, nations and religions. His music is a mix of African music with Western pop- and rock elements.
"The hospitality of this country is how we?re praised, The singer?s singing the hospitality of Senegal, The rapper is talking about the hospitality of Senegal, The writer is writing about the hospitality of Senegal, Since hospitality is what we?re known for.
We should never prove otherwise when visitors come to our country, If we give them a warm welcome, they will want to come back. Hey cab driver, don?t take advantage of them, Hey salesman, don?t take advantage of them, Whatever they bring, it?s for the whole country.
We should never prove other than what we?re known for, when somebody comes to our country. Welcome him, treat him right, so after he leaves, he?ll want to come back. The dirt, the waste and the bad smell, destroy and cause illness. Then everybody will be afraid to come here.
When somebody comes to our country, welcome him, treat him right, So when he leaves, he?ll want to come back. Pick pocketers, crooks, destroy. Then everybody will be afraid to come here.
Let?s step back and look at ourselves, and act like how we?re known, Share our wishes and our forces with them, So when they leave, they will want to come back." (Tourista, translation) |
