It seems like prison to me Alcatraz is a must-see while in SF. It's a bit of history in San Francisco Bay. Hey, Al Capone lived here-not that he wanted to, of course.
Take the ferry from Pier 41 to Alcatraz, check out the grounds, the cells, etc. Pay the $5 extra for the guided tour-it's worth it.
A couple of words of caution: Alcatraz is steep, with lots of climbing. It offers a "tram service" for those who can't make the walk up and down the hill-it leaves once an hour. Also, its an island in the middle of SF Bay-it gets cold there!!!
