The Fort (in memory of Reuben)

by Katmosphere - last update: Jan 26, 2005

This is one of my favorite off the beaten path, and I mean WAY OFF the beaten path kind of place. It's a fort that someone built back in the mangroves off of Biscayne Bay. It's so hard to find that you either have to stumble across it, or scope it out by helicopter (how I found out about it). You can only get there by canoe, kayak or jet ski, as the waterways there are very shallow. (not even a flats boat can go back there)
path to the fort
Getting there is like being on a Disney Ride , except it's real. The paths in the water meander through mangroves, tons of birds, manatees and the occasional alligator, it's always beautiful. Sometimes, if the tide is really low, you get stuck on roots and you really have to maneuver your way through.
me
My friend Irma and I often go there, and we bring wine and munchies and we solve the problems of the world. We've nailed the global warming problem, now we're working on world peace.
don't fall in here....
There is even a bathroom, but you have to walk down this shaky plank, and after that wine you better be holding on to those hand rails, trust me. The "bathroom" is actually an old toilet seat on top of a hole in a mangrove. It always cracks me up when I see it.
