Grad School trips

by TimDaoust - last update: Dec 5, 2008

Fishermans Wharf

San Francisco

March of 07. Went to visit a friend I haven't seen in ages in San Francisco. I spent a great deal of the trip walking around the city by myself because my friend works and I was there mid week. I was pleased with the trip for many reasons if only because I got to see much more of the city than I did when I came in 88. Highlights were Coit Tower, Fisherman's wharf, the city's architecture especially around Alamo Square, Haight street and Amoeba records, Golden Gate Park, The Embarcadero, Blue Bottle Coffee Company, SF Conservatory, The MOMA, Walking to the center of the Golden Gate Bridge and, of course, getting to see my friend.
Pont Royal, Paris

France

July-August 2007. This was my fifth trip to Paris, if you count the first time I went to Europe in 1999, the two times I stayed there at the beginning and end of my study abroad trip in 2002, and the trip with my parents in 2005. My folks came again this time and I wanted them to have a much better time this time around but also I wanted to show my Aunt Paris for her first time. Not just Paris though. My dad's ancestors came from Brittany (we think) so I incorporated a huge excursion to Brittany, complete with a stay at Saint Malo on the English Channel, a car ride through Brittany, stopping in a little town called Malestroit and then Josselin (for the chateau there) and finally stopping in Angers, where I studied in 02. The trip was amazing....
Eiffel Tower, July
Highlights were: arriving in Paris the day the Tour de France was ending, the Amazing weather (65 F and sunny) for the first few days, showing my Aunt the Eiffel Tower for her first time from the top of the Montparnasse Tower, eating dinner in Montmartre three different times, seeing Pere LaChaise cemetery for the first time, finally, the beach in Saint Malo, driving through Brittany in a tiny Clio Renault, the town of Malestroit, Josselin Chateau, seeing Angers again, the Chateau, my old haunts, stopping by la Maison du Vin for a tasting while we were there, Giverny, Monet's house, and I know I'm missing something. We had ten amazing days there and, as is customary, I can't wait to go back.
Grand Central Station

New York City

March of 08. I finally made it to New York for a real trip. Before Paris back in July 08, we stayed there for two days and when I was in high school I took a chaperoned trip with my high school chorus. But this was a real trip, to get to know the city a little better. I spent a lot of my time in midtown or in Queens but I got to romp around central park for a bit, see the MET, see the MOMA, go up in the Empire State building (rip off), and hang out with a lot of my friends who live in Queens. The trip got me really excited about moving up there.

New York City again

October of 08. Now, as I visit the city again, I'm priming myself for the move. I spent a lot of time in Brooklyn because that's the area I'm thinking of living in. I got to see a great deal of Prospect Park and the Prospect Heights and Park Slope areas, I saw a show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and even went to a party at the R bar in Lower Manhattan.
