Visiting the Louvre when it's closed

by mariev - last update: Mar 27, 2005

Le caroussel du Louvre (with snow)
Even on Tuesday, when the Louvre is closed, you can have a little visit.

Starting Place du Caroussel
(with the Jardin des Tuileries just behind the Arc de Triomphe du Caroussel)
Le square et la pyramide
Crossing the road to reach the Louvre itself, you can see the Pyramide and the square du Louvre.
Left : the Aile Richelieu,
Right : the Aile Denon,
Center : the Pavillon Sully (behind the Pyramide).
Reaching the square : here the aile Richelieu where the temporaries exhibitions are hosted.

Having a closer look at the Pyramide (the main entrance for the museum is just downstairs).
When the museum is open, you will see huge queues here.
Passageway detail
Some walk in the covered passageways, here under the arches - Aile Richelieu
From the Passage Richelieu (center of the namesake aisle) you can catch a glimpse of the collections trough the windows.
A travers les vitres
Le Pavillon de l'Horloge
Reaching the old Louvre :
The Cour Carree (a quasi perfect square, each aisle bring about 112 m) is the eldest surviving part of the Louvre.
Time to double back :

Returning from the Cour Carree to the other side of the square (the aile Denon)

This photo is dedicated toall who always wanted to know how the Louvre's windows were cleaned and never dared to ask.
Cleaning the house (euh.. the Louvre)
Little drummer on the roof
From Nov 2004 and until Februray.10 2005, when paying a close look at the aile Denon, you could see alittle drummer sitting on the roof (don't worry, an automat, not a child) and if you were lucky enough, you may even have heared him play is drum (he acted as a clock and played each hour, he was part of an exhibition from the italian contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan).
