Placencia

by paradisedreamer - last update: Jan 3, 2005

Thursday 30 December

Marc’s ear is now completely blocked up. I hope we can get to a doctor in Placencia. The death toll in Asia is now 116K, horrific!
We hung around the cabana (Hopkins) so Sam could play with all the new friends she had made in the village. They want her to stay so they can take her to school with them!
You can stand anywhere along the road in Hopkins and the bus to Placencia will stop for you (just wave your arms around and the driver gets the message if the pack on your back isn’t and obvious sign). The scenery as you leave Hopkins is beautiful and then you get to the Sittee River whose banks are lush jungle. The road is dirt and because of the heavy rains it was very bumpy. We all managed to get seats but I had to have Sam on my lap. Not long after we got onto the main road our bus broke down. Oh Joy!! Co-incidentally we broke down outside a bar and in this area it os probably the only one… hmmm you have to wonder!
We recognized a couple that were on our boat from Caye Caulker and got some drinks and passed the time with them. We had to wait for a bus from Dangriga to bring us spares. A local Belizean said there was no way the bus was going anywhere that day (he was the first to get off the bus and get a beer so we reckoned he is experienced in this!). We managed to hitch a ride all the way to Placencia yee haw! This guy was so kind, we managed to get his family, the three of us, a woman and her three kids as well as three Americans in the van.
