In spite of the fact that the house is on the river, the docent says that the front of the house with the big columns is toward the street. The stairway on this side goes from the veranda to the balcony on the far side.
She said that the last owner of the house preferred that people view the house for the first time NOT a straight on view as in the top picture, but coming from the side path
She said that the visitor's center used to be in this little back room, so they had no choice but to allow folks to come in the 'front way'
There was a large lightening rod on the end of the house (I don't know whether you can see it in the picture or not. Plus this shows the shutters covering the stairs from the weather outside.
The docent said that the story about the tax on stairs was not a true one. She thought that the reason the stairs were outside was that they didn't take up space inside that way. There is a stairway on the front of the house, and one inside of the brick work at the back of the house on the other end.
Sometimes when I am taking pictures, I try to defeat the reflections by using them - in this case they show the bubbly glass in the windows. For a clearer glass, I can often get a picture of myself reflected. This view also shows all the way through the room to the window on the other side.
This is a sideboard which is somewhat like one that I have, although mine is narrower. It is in the dining room. The picture above this was taken through the opposing window.

I was stationed at New Iberia from Feb.1960 to May 1962 as an air traffic controller in the tower.
I was stationed at New Iberia from 61 to 63 with VT27. Serviced radioes and navagation equipment there as an AT3. At that time there was only 1 hanger. The one in the pic.
Right now---at the Day's Inn computer in New Iberia checking out your restaurant tips for our dinner tonight!! So cool to have this information "first hand"!! Angie
The church in your picture is St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Jeanerette, not New Iberia.
I don't know how I found this site but it is great to see N.I. again. I assigned Bob his plane every morning. There from late 59 to early 62.
Nice travelogues! I passed through here on a Greyhound bus in October and was curious about the sights.
