C-130 Hercules Ski Bird

by frankcanfly - last update: Dec 26, 2004

On Odell Glacier
Over a ton of skies
These are standard C-130's with the addition of Skis. With the two main, and the nose ski, it adds about 3 tons to the weight of the aircraft.
Defueling at the South Pole
In addition to distributing cargo and passengers throughout the continent, they also extract fuel from their tanks to resupply fuel for the station's generators.

They takeoff with just enough fuel to return to McMurdo Station.
Viagra for Airplanes
If the conditions are especially rough, this aircraft can add on JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) bottles for that extra punch to break away from the suction of the skies freezing to the surface.

Had no idea there were so many "researchers" in Anartica! Looks like a big fraternity party every night!

The operative question about your trip is, did you "join the club" by er...streaking between buildings at the base? One of my engineers set up the SAT com to enhance their internet communication at one point.
