Parque Nacional Tortuguero Situated on the North East Caribbean coast Tortuguero national park is named after the Spanish for turtle (Tortuga) and several species of turtle breed here. The park is mainly rain forest with an abundance of rivers and canals. Because of this the main way of getting about in the Tortuguero area is by river boat. |
| | Big Trees There was always the opportunity to walk in the rainforest. A chance not to be missed, I am no botanist but even I could not fail to be impressed by the sheer size and variety of plantlife that grew there. |
Ants The first sight that greeted us when we arrived at our accommodation in Tortuguero was a line of leaf cutter ants. This line a column would be a better description, stretched for over 100m across the paths and into the forest. The ants would labour day and night cutting sections of leaf and carrying them this great distance (for an ant) back to their nest. The ants do not eat the leaves but rather grow a fungus on the leaves which is then eaten.
| | Crocodiles If you are really lucky you might see some big Crocodiles like this chap here, however normally the most commonly seen in the Tortuguero area are Spectacled Caimans. Strangley though I didn't see one Caiman in Tortuguero but I did see three of the much larger American Crocodiles. |
Spider Monkey If you are even luckier you might get to see a Central American Spider Monkey, I only got a fleeting glimpse of a couple and this sad photograph was the best I could take
