The Museum of the Confederacy - entrance

The flag put by the entrance to the Museum of the Confederacy is commonly known as the "STARS AND BARS". The flag contained 13 five pointed stars. Each star symbolized one state admitted to the Confederacy.

Nat and Condeferate Battle Flag

This flag was available in the Haversack Store of the Museum of the Confederacy. I asked Nat to pose for that picture.

The Stars and bars flag of the Confederacy was similar to the Stars and Stripes flag of the Union. Thus, the commanders had problems to distinguish their troops from those of the enemy. That's why the different flag was adopted. Thus, it became the most well- known of the Confederate flags: the two crossed bars with the 13 stars (the Southern Cross). The Confederate Battle Flag has become the generally recognized symbol of the South.

Virginia State Flag

A deep blue field contains the seal of Virginia with the Latin motto " Sic Semper Tyrannis" which means "Thus Always to Tyrants". The flag was adopted in 1776.

Alabama State Flag

This is Crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white field, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, and adopted in 1895.

Tennessee State Flag

The flag was adopted by the Tennessee State Legislature in 1905. The three stars refer to the three sharply contrasting geographical divisions of the state of Tennessee: the East, the Middle and the West Tennessee.

Missouri State Flag

The Missouri state seal is centered on red, white and blue fields. The twenty-four stars represents the number of states in 1821. There are two huge grizzly bears and motto "United We Stand, Divided we Fall" in the center.

Kentucky State Flag

There is the seal and words "Commonwealth of Kentucky" placed on a navy blue field. The two people on the seal, a pioneer and a statesman, represent all the people. They are acting out the meaning of Kentucky's motto: "United We Stand; Divided We Fall". Sprays of goldenrod extend in a half circle around the picture.
