If you are looking for an island even less-visited by tourists than Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel fits the bill. Although nearly 240-km long, almost no tourists come here and the presence of even a single traveler seems to attract the curiosity of the locals. There are not many attractions, per se, but then again the primary purpose for visiting this island is to meet the people. Although a provincial capital, the town of Buala is extremely quiet and small. Still, there's everything you need--a few stores, a Solomon Airlines rep, and a few government offices.
The airport is situated on a small island a short ways off shore. There didn't seem to be any scheduled transport to the mainland, so I just had to bum a ride with another visitor on somebody's canoe. As always in the Solomons, you need to talk to people and make friends to get around. |

| | There's a fantastic hike you can take to the hydroelectric plant dam in the hills behind the town. Ask around for directions; a guide is not necessary and you will not be walking on private land.
Do take plenty of water. The hike is rather steep and tiresome, although the views are well worth it. |

| | OK, I guess this isn't the most exciting picture you've ever seen, but what if I told you there was a huge gorge underneath the bridge! And note that there is no railing--you have to walk on the wooden planks on the top and hope you don't tip over.
NOW what do you think? |
