Medieval gathering place and burial mounds

21 November 2004 - season's first snow ...

Heerenhul

Heerenhul - this is a place in the woods were people gathered in the Middle Ages. Here, members of the court of justice pronounced their verdict in cases brought before them. The court was presided by their feudal lord, the Count (later Duke) of Gelria, from the 13th century onward.

Detail of the stone at the centre of Heerenhul.

I am not sure whether the stone's setting is authentic ; in those days, people prefered to gather underneath old trees - or so I'm told. Then again, large stones of this kind can be found in the Netherlands - they drifted along from Scandinavia on the giant ice shelf in the Ice Age and were used to build the megalithic tombs in Drenthe.

Funny name, 'Heerenhul', it rhymes with Dutch facetious expressions Berenl*l or Hondenl*l...

Burial mounds

Another interesting site - Bruggelen burial mounds. This is the largest (or best visible) of a set of three mounds. Some 4,000 years old.
