Sanibel / Captiva, Florida

"Arriving At The Causeway To The Island"

"The Entrance To Paradise"

This is like another "Home Away From Home"
After arriving at the Ft. Meyers Airport,
we first pick up our car, and drive on to
Sanibel / Captaiva Island

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words
Well, here is one of those pictures ....
We will think of you skiing on the slopes
while we sip Margarita's on the boat.

"Florida's Nice Shoreline"

We always love returning to the
warm sands in Florida .... :o)

This was taken about 1/2 way on the
causeway that leads to the islands. It is
basically always sunny, warm, and just
great knowing of the nice days that are
always ahead.

"Sunrise On Sanibel Island"

Some of the best shell collecting areas
in the United States is found on
Sanibel & Captiva Islands .....

When we are in the mood for shelling,
we get up and out on the beach for
low tide at 5:00 AM to 5:30 AM to see what
little treasures we can find. Never being
surprized, we always see alot of others are
always out on the beach doing some shelling.

"Sanibel Stoop / Captiva Crouch"

To get the best selection of shells
that was during high tide, you must
be out there right after the tide goes
back out both in Sanibel & Captiva.

The morning low tide is the best time
for shelling, so we get out there at
the crack of dawn as the sun is just
coming up each morning, usually
about 5:00 to 5:30 AM when we want
to do a little shelling.

When shelling in Sanibel, you do
the "Sanibel Stoop" as they call
it to pickup shells, and on the
other end of the islands in Captiva,
they call it the "Captiva Crouch"
when you bend over to pick up shells.

As you can see, Mary and Al are out
there doing the "Sanibel Stoop"

"Assortment Of Shells"

"Shelling On Sanibel Island"

This is a sample after about 1 hour of
looking for some nice shells.
We always find alot of nice shells, but as
they say: "NO LIVE SHELLING" ...
That means. look in the shell, if there
is someone home, you put it back .....

"Getting The Larger Shells"

Once we really get tired of doing the
"Sanibel Stoop", and getting a good
assortment of smaller shells, we
expand our search for the larger
shells that seemed to be plentiful on
the very end of the island near the
"Old Sanibel Lighthouse".

The difference was that you could not
use the "Sanibel Stoop" to get them.

To get the larger shells, you have to go
into the deeper water, waist to chin
high, or even deeper (at low tide) ....

Then you snorkle looking for the larger
shells that can be found about 50' feet
or so off shore.

If you were willing to do that and spend
a little time looking around, it pays
off .... :o) We always have extra we give
away to those who did not want to venture
into the deeper water ....
or, we just leave them on the beach, and
someone will pick them up.

"Old Sanibel Light House"

Standing proudly at the very end
of "Old Sanibel" where the bay
meets the Gulf of Mexico, lighting
the way for boaters and ships of
all types and sizes, is the historic
"Old Sanibel Light House" .....
It has weathered many storms,
including the 4 hurricanes of 2004.
