Kings of Israel
It is sort of silly of me to do anything on Notre Dame. It is probably the most photographed, visited and written about cathedral in the world. But when you visit it, it is not possible to refrain from taking photos because it is always amazing and there are always things you have not seen before. My best excuse for this travelogue is that it is my personal experience and if anyone else benefits from it, so much the better. I learned on this visit that the three dozen or so statues above the portals are the kings of Israel.

Facelift in progress

We have visited ND several times in the last 10 years and each time noticed that the exterior is being cleaned. This is a slow, expensive and painstaking process because great care is taken not to injure the surface while cleaning it. The front is much cleaner than the first time we saw it but there is still a lot to be done on the other sides.

How many gargoyles?

I have no idea how many gargoyles there are on Notre Dame but they are one of the things that particularly caught my eye on this visit. I just thought this view of them lined up down the side of the church was pretty neat.

More gargoyles

The gargoyles really are everywhere including up and around this front tower.
Side view

From any angle

You don't quit taking photos after you leave the front. Here on the side is this wonderful view of spires, saints, more gargoyles of course and a group of copper figures that appear to be climbing the central spire.

Wow, Rex, I'll be in Paris in 4 weeks and thanks to your pics re the Blue Train restaurant, I'm extra excited. Staying across the road, so will definitely have our last night there. Regards, Kate

Your usual bang-up job with photos and tips, Rex! Paris is on our list too - I'm relieved that you found it easy to navigate as we don't speak any French either. In fact, I'd make such a mess of it that I'm afraid I'll offend the good folks there!

I just recommended your page to a VT member going to Paris and staying in the 7th arrondissement. I took the opportunity to review your Paris tips again :-). We're leaving in June this year.
