Cruise to the grottoes

by haiamisa - last update: Nov 5, 2004

Leaving Lagos on Noel
On the second day in Lagos we went on a cruise to see some beautiful grottoes. There are several stalls by the marina that sell these cruises and cruises to Sagres or dolphin watching or big game fishing. The company we chose was Espadarte do Sul and the boat (in the picture) was called Noel. The cruise took 1.5 hours and cost 10 Euro per person. The cruise was great.
Heading west along the coast
It was cool in the morning when we reached the harbour (15th Sept) but the weather got better and we could take the jackets off and enjoyed the sun. All the mornings and evenings in Lagos were chilly but hot during the day.
We were about 12 people on the boat. Most of them were Dutch. There was also on Portuguese couple with a little girl. The crew was great, very helpful with many explanations about the grottoes.
The rocks have interesting layers of several colors. The sea is very clean and with lots of boats; fishing, sailing, yachts, tourist "taxis" for the grottoes.
On the way to the grottoes
The grottoes have many different shapes and the ship crew has names for all of them. We were inside a grotto that was called "cathedral" and you really could imagine that it was one as it had a special high pointed "ceiling".
We went inside the grottoes with a smaller boat. They took us in two loads.
Inside a grotto
It is so nice to go inside a grotto on a boat. I had done this before on the Comino island in Malta.
The formation on the right looks like an elephant. I have seen two elephant grottoes before, one in Rosh HaNikra, Israel and another one on the Gozo island in Malta.

Seagulls beside the boat
Don't forget to take some bread with you to feed the seagulls. They are happy to eat it and come really close as they must be used to people feeding them.

Interesting little page with brilliant photos of this well know Algarve resort. Unfortunately I only made it to Faro in this part of Portugal.
