Haunted Halloween

by SheDragon - last update: Sep 10, 2002

Halloween in New Orleans was definitely exciting! New Orleans is definitely THE town to be in for Halloween! Imagine Mardi Gras, only not quite so many people, and everyone is all dressed up, and the New Orleans ghosts are running the town! We got to see a group of people setting up for a voodoo ritual in Armstrong park (we had to leave before it started, too bad), and we got to see most of the parade down Bourbon street! This is just one of the more extravagant costumes we saw. One of the cheapest was a woman who went topless but with makeup all over her body...to be honest...it took me a second to realize she was topless! (Sorry, guys, didn't get a pic of her!)
Another pic of the parade...
Scary!!! And this guy was just watching the parade!
Hubby and I decided to go as the scariest thing in the whole world...TOURISTS! As I showed to another couple who was honeymooning, I had four different kinds of cameras in my backpack...disposables, a panoramic, a standard film camera, and a digital camera! I think I scared everyone completely after that!
Here's Hubby sporting some cameras....He decided he only needed the camcorder and a digital...
So, what did we do with our Halloween night? We went on a Haunted History tour...their Voodoo and Witchcraft Tour. Our guide was Rudy Raven, and he took us past Marie Louveau's house, her shop, and Armstrong park, where she used to hold meetings. We also learned a lot about how pagan symbols were incorporated into traditional Catholic symbols by those who still practiced the old religions in secret, and we learned about Romeo hooks! Okay, Romeo hooks have nothing to do with voodoo or withcraft, but are actually hooks that were on a lot of the posts that hold up the balconies in the French Quarter. The idea is, a boy can manage to shimmy up the post to get to the girl's bedroom, but he'd never be able to shimmy back down after he's caught without some major pain. Hubby says if we have a daughter he's going to look into them....
And here is our tour guide explaining something I found completely fascinating at the time, but since can not remember. Whatever it was had something to do with what is behind Rudy and the other tour members, I just completely don't remember what it is or what it means.
And we ended our tour with a tour of the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick, at 523 Dumaine Street in the French Quarter. While there we got to see Hamilet Shakespeare, the shop's familiar, and a very famous cat all on his own. He is known for his eyes, since they are two different colors. We got to meet Hamilet, but he didn't seem terrbily interested in me, personally....not sure if that is a good thing or not...

Very nice pictures of the statues around the market. I've always liked them too. Great area to sit and relax a while.
