Boat Trips on Spree and Havel

by sabsi - last update: Jun 3, 2003

A cruise on the river Spree

Oberbaumbrücke
A really nice way to see more of Berlin is by boat. My favourite boat trip is along the Spree from "Schloss Charlottenburg" (Charlottenburg Palace) via Tiergarten and Friedrichstrasse into the East to Treptow.

If you're lucky your boats takes a different route on the way back - through the "Landwehrkanal". We weren't, but it was a lovely day still - here you get some impressions of those 3 hours!!!! I even learn something on this trip - I learnt that the "Haus der Kulturen der Welt" in Tiergarten is nicknamed "Grinning Jimmy Carter". Unfortunately I don't have a picture for you, but the name fits perfectly!

Ask at the Tourist Information about all the different boat trips available.

A cruise on the Havel and Wannsee

The other boat I took here - that I didn't row myself - was on the Havel Lakes. We started from Glienecker Brücke, the bridge where spies were exchanged in Cold war times.

There are not as many sights to see on this cruise but it's lovely on a sunny day. You see several houses where several WWII related things happened (contracts were signed, decisions were made etc), you see the Italian Chapel that used to be between the two borderlines ... and you see lovely houses of filthy rich people!

The bridge divided East and West Berlin until 1989. Now it divides Berlin and Potsdam. This is the place where spies were exchanged from east to west in cold war times.

Gr8 Berlin tips. The Holocaust Memorial tips are the best I have seen. I will be back to read your other pages, you have done a very good job. Going back to Berlin soon and you have added to my knowledge base for planning. Thanks.

Some great information here about roads less travelled in Berlin. The personal perspective is wonderful and really gives me a feel for the city. :))

Hi Sabsi, thank you so much for great tips/pics. I love it how you mix the old (wall) with the new Berlin. This year I'm going back 1st time in 20!years (I didn't take a lot of pics then, i was only 16, but thank you for doing it for me!) Linda
