~ MOST BEAUTIFUL BRIDGE ~
The photo shown here is of a cherub on the pont Alexandre III (the Alexander III bridge), which most people consider to be by far the most beautiful bridge in Paris.
~ OLDEST LIVING TREE ~
Open to some dispute, the most likely one exists in the Square Vivian alongside the St-Julien-le-Pauvre church. The sign below it states that it is a 'Robinia pseudoacacia' planted in 1602. Some records show that it was planted in 1680. Another 17th century tree of the same species still stand in the Jardin des Plantes.
~ OLDEST HOUSE ~
Maison du Haut-Pignon, built in 1407 for the writer and alchemist Nicolas Flamel. Today a restaurant, the Auberge Nicolas Flamel located at 51 rue de Montmorency, in the 3rd arrondissement has a dark stone facade with a Latin inscription, and medieval carvings. The beamed house at 3 rue Volta, in the 4th arrondissement has an unknown history but also an oldie.
~ LONGEST STREET ~
The rue de Vaugirard is almost 3 miles long. It starts at the Boulevard Saint-Michel in the 6th arrondissement and ending at the Porte de Versailles in the 15th arrondissement. This is also one of the city's longest streets, following the path of a Roman Road.
~ SHORTEST STREET ~
The rue des Degrés, really a little stairway of 14 steps connecting the rue de Cléry and rue Beauregard in the 2nd arrondissement. It is just over 18 feet long and 11 feet wide. It is too small for houses or shops but wears several street signs.
~ SHORTEST BRIDGE ~
The aptly named Petit Pont, connecting the Ile de la Cité with the Left Bank near Notre-Dame. Today's 130-foot span dates fron 1854 and stands on the site of the city's first bridge, a wooden structure built by the Gauls sometime before the Romans arrived in 52 B.C.
~ TALLEST STRUCTURE ~
Of course, it's the Eiffel Tower standing at 1,069 feet. It was the world's tallest building until New York's Chrysler Building topped it in 1930.
~ MOST BEAUTIFUL PUBLIC TOILET ~
In front of the Church of the Madeleine in the 8th arrondissement, this public facility has Art Nouveau mosaics, stained glass in the cabin doors, and a mahogany shoe shine chair. |
