Bukhara - a gem in central asia

Koljan minaret and mosque

Bukhara's main square

At night everything looks different, with no people around and all the ancient buildings lit up like the ones you see in the photo here. It was a really good idea to spend the whole evening walking around major sights to be able to compare them at night to what they look like in the daytime. I must say the comparison was not in favour of the latter!
Sunset in Bukhara
The evening was spent wandering around some of the architectural marvels on the outskirts of the town, and just as we were heading back to town my friend captured the wonderful sunset -
Nat, my travel compainion and myself

That same evening

My friend and I had the good fortune of meeting a wonderful guide and friend who showed us around the city in the daytime and in the evening invited for a typical local meal in a restaurant. It was the best hours we spend in Bukhara - talking, relaxing, enjoying ourselves (that's exactly what we're doing in this pic)
Chor Minor

Unusual building

This gem of oriental architecture may well be described as off the beaten path - it takes quite a while to locate in the maze of narrow bumpy side streets but it's worthwhile anyway. What is unusual about it is that it has four minarets (not one), and you can even climb to the roof. (like i did in this pic)
While doing the sightseeing, I got a chance to see some craftsmen at work - they were right there, out in the streets, next to the stalls with stuff on sale, wasting no time, creating new plates, cups, small clay figures, etc. Even children as young as the one in this photo are taking over their parents business.

View from the Koljan minaret

It's one of the madrassahs that is so typical of Bukhara. Actually I remember the process of climbing the minaret even better and more vividly than the views we got when were on the top. Still, being able to take in the whole town from there is an unforgettable experience and getting such a perspective on the buildings as huge as this is wonderful.
One of three oldest markets in town
