From I was 9 months old, I've been going up here once a year with my family; a few years I haven't been at all, a few years I've been there twice. My mum grew up on this little island with 175 inhabitants. |
| We call it 'piggsvinet' - the hedge hog |
Seeing this bridge means we've come to Sandnessjøen, the city from which we take the boat to the island. Some aunts and uncles (my mother has 5 brothers and 4 sisters) moved from the island to this city. After 14 hours in the car, one or two days, someone always goes "Let's see who will see the bridge first!" when we get close, and it's always great to see it. Wow, we're there soon... |
Going across the bridge. The view from my seat in the car. |
Wasn't that boat supposed to be here by now...?? |
Finally on the boat! I love the ocean, the smell, the breeze blowing gently as the boat makes its way towards the islands in the horizon... |
| Rainbow, but....is it raining? |
It's quiet, it's isolated, it's beautiful... as a vacation. We tend to come here at the time when my uncle is putting the calves outside. We all help, we have to put up the poles and the fence around. Then bring them from the barn to the little area (like a circle on a field close to the houses, bottom left of pic above) where they are going to be for a few weeks. |
Now... they might look like cute little things, sweet and innocent when they're inside, scared if you come to close, kinda curious... Well, get them in a rope, get them outside and you'll be hanging on for dear life. They're strong. And they sure wanna play. It's the youngest calves that go in the fence because they aren't big enough to be let lose in a bigger area yet, usually about 5 or 6 of them. After putting them inside their circle they usually calm down. But, and there is a big but.. when you get one in, you have to put the fence up, while the rest of your relatives are standing around, making sure they don't get out. Cuz when they run towards the fence, they can break the whole thing. This goes on many times, getting the calves in one by one. Then when we've done that, the next thing is putting the electric wire thing around. Then watching them for an hour or so while they smell it, lick it, touch it. They have to get used to it so it they don't hurt themselves or try and run away. Chasing a runaway calf around the island is not my uncle's kind of fun... Summer memories come in all shapes and sizes :) |

Whereabout is your island? | Mongy Wed Nov 15, 2006 05:07 UTC You really have an excellent eye for beautiful scenaries...Very sensitive sense of art!!! | Siddha3th Fri Oct 29, 2004 18:07 UTC Your photographs speak more than the proverbial 1000 words, Anne. I simply loved them :) Norway's sparse starkness is very haunting. Catch you on VT sometime... Siddharth from India | mapakettle Mon Oct 25, 2004 20:25 UTC Anne, is this island a tourist destination of any sort? Interesting to read about the electric fence. Pa |
