Botanic Gardens

Welcome to the Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Near the entrance
Peacock fountain

Aren't we in England??

Immediately as you enter the Botanic Gardens it is like being somewhere else. Admittedly looking back on Christchurch as a whole it didn't really feel like being in New Zealand at all, but in England instead. But back to the gardens, so it feels like being in England? Yes it does, which is not a bad thing...
Rotunda

Some of the sights

Close to the entrance you can find the lovely Peacock fountain, a fountain erected for and by Mr. Peacock. It is beautifully made and maybe a bit weird that it had been neglected for over 40 years. Quite recently it was completely redecorated and looks stunning as ever.

A bit further into the Gardens and close to the Avon again you can see this rotunda. No it is not the same as the other rotunda also along the river, though Christchurch seems to have its fair share of rotundas.
Punting through the gardens

The Avon

Somehow everywhere you go your path will suddenly cross the Avon again. Quite astonishing isn't it? The river twists and winds it's way through Christchurch and through the gardens. Go on a punting trip and view the gardens and the city from a different angle.
The Rosary

The flowers

No Botanic Garden is complete without its fair share of flowers here and there. Unlike the Botanics I have seen in Australia that mostly have tropical plants and flowers the ones in Christchurch have some more traditional ie. European style plants. There is a rosary, but there are also loads and loads of roses outside in all different sizes and colours and shapes.
Dahlia's
Another favourite are the dahlia's. Many many colours, though the shapes are quite similar. Still an amazing flower. Too they didn't have any orchids, which are my favourites.... Maybe I'll get to see them somehwre else...

I liked your photos of Christchurch. Cathedral square looked so pretty and the Botanical Gardens very inviting! The River Avon seemed an interesting element to the city, too.

The idea of cruising down the Avon through the middle of the city is quite cool! It doesn't look like there is any white-water rafting opportunities on that river. Excellent photos and write-ups.

Nice job Martin. It brought back some good memories of my vacation in Christchurch. And your pictures are a lot better than mine LOL
