New Delhi, which is the Capital of India is one of the ancient cities of India. It's antiquity goes beyond written history, possibly more than c 100 B.C. or more. A good place to have a look at ancient Indian history is the National Museum near India Gate on Janpath.
The earliest known capital city of Indraprastha was founded by Pandavas in c 1450 B.C. Other cities which were founded here are Surajkund, c 1024 AD, Qila Lal Kot c 1024 AD, Quila Rai Pithora c 1170 AD, Siri, c 1302 AD, Tughlakabad, c 1320 AD, Adilabad & Jahanpanah c 1334 AD, Firuzabad, c 1351 AD, Dinpanah c 1530 AD, Sahajahanabad, c 1648 AD and finally New Delhi built by the British.
The modern city of Delhi has grown and has engulfed all the ancient city sites and spreads across the river Yamuna and the Northern Ridge of the Aravali Mountain range.
Delhi is a city of delightful contradictions. It is full of surprises with the Western and Eastern ways of life merging in a unique blend of culture and colours. The bustling crowds of Old Delhi create a carnival like atmosphere giving a peek into its older days with its colourful bazars, cycle rickshaws and narrow lanes with old buildings. New Delhi with its elegant boulevards and busy roads presents an entirely different and modern metropolis, creating a harmony of contrasts with a distinctive mark of its own.
Delhites call it their pride. 'Meri Dilli Meri Shaan'
