On Sunday in September 2004, the only thing I got to see colorful up in the sky at The Great Reno Balloon Race was a fabulous dawn. As you can see by the clouds, the winds were whipping off Slide Mountain between Reno and Carson City, so they were forced to stay on the ground for safety.
As mentioned above, the flight was cancelled. But the balloons that were to have been the "Dawn Patrol" showed off their colors anyway.
At about five AM on Saturday and Sunday, a few of the balloons (4) got together for some choreographed lighting. The two bees were part of it, but I was too far away to get a good picture of them.
When this one was blowing up, I figured it was Sponge Bob at first. But then I realized it was the Re-Max house balloon.
In 2004 I didn't get the chance to see the Energizer bunny balloon because I went on day two and high winds cancelled the mass ascention. I copied the little pic from their website! It is so cute...
This picture I took leaving San Rafael Park, by walking up a service road and into some fields where there is parking. Warning... when you show up it is dark enough in spots that you need to bring a flashlight.
Seeing this many people buying stuff at expensive stands, and noticing that some people traveled to watch the show, and others camped out for days with their RVs out for days on McCarren Blvd. only serves to remind me that this country's economy is flying high enough that people have enough disposible income to participate in festivals like this.
Later this week Edwards is coming to Reno, and I decided that he and Kerry are full of hot air. Millions of dollars are invested in these balloons, that pretty much seem to serve the purpose of looking pretty and being great entertainment. If all the spectators were home saving dimes because we are in the worst economy since the Great Depression either, this show would have been cancelled this year. Not to mention, the next weeked is the air races which bring an estimated $60 million dollars in tourism revenue... why? Because people have disposible income. That is for sure.
This picture was taken with a flash, and you can faintly see all the dust in the air reflecting the light. That was my least favorite part of the experience. The paths in San Rafael Park have an inch or so of fine dust on them, and thousands of people trudging through it down into the valley made for miserable air quality.
Well, I'll end this page with another lovely sunrise picture. The clouds trapped the colors so perfectly that morning in September 2004. So, I might have missed the mass ascention this year, but I sure didn't feel cheated. The annoucer said something like, "If you collect sunsets, we're going to have a nice one." He was right. It was a lovely morning to be awake.

Hello Angie, Just thought I would pop in and see how much you have added to your pages. Alot I see. So how is Reno treating you? We are headed out on the 20th for a long weekend! Joyce
Reno is quite a bit from Ketchikan and the rest of the North, but the views and skiing up on Mt Rose make up for it.
Hi Angie, Reno looks a smart place. Youve got some interesting pages!!
