"Magallan Penguins" Puerto Madryn Travelogue by TinyTuck

Puerto Madryn Travel Guide: 125 reviews and 310 photos

A childhood dream came true here! In the zoo I've always loved the penguins the lost. And here you could walk between 1000s of them!!! And they were's scared at all as you can tell by my close pictures!

Interesting animals

Penguis are monogam, a couple stays together all their life! They have 2 babies each year that they give birth to in little holes like you can see on the top picture. Husband and wife both breed part time, the other one has to take a walk down to the sea and swim away to come back a few days later with food for spose and kids (who don't have anything to eat inbetween!) Then the other one goes... They come here to have their babies, later they travel on to Antarctica.

Environnemental dangers

With more and more coast lines being destroyed they have to squeeze many of them into a smaller area. First come first serve: the faster ones get to have the best caves close to the sea. The ones who have to stay further away are in trouble because the long walk is very exausting for Mr and Mrs Penguin, and food won't be provided as fast...
So it was sad to see some dead babies here and there ,-(

Oil catastrophies will make the penguin drown, as the lipide layer that covers their fethers to enable him to swim gets destroyed...:-(

I love the way they walk!

Those are the ones who come back with food after a long trip. Some of them will have to walk really far to get to their family. And they definately prefer swimming to walking!

Well, at least you saw lots of wildlife this time! Guanacos and a penguin in the same photo is pretty amazing.
