Familiarisation tour - Daylesford Tourism

by Kate-Me - last update: Aug 29, 2004

I recently joined Daylesford Tourism as a volunteer, and part of the training/general familiarisation are familiarisation tours, which take place about once a month. A bus picks us up at the Tourism Centre and takes us around to various businesses to see firsthand, and later on to lunch before dropping us back.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first tour.
I live 20 minutes away and know the town, but many of the streets we went down and places we visited were completely unknown to me, so it was great and all new.

Sitting high on a hill overlooking the Daylesford township, I came across a real Swiss chalet! And as far as I can tell, it's not a B & B or a business, but a private house - even has the stag horns on the outside wall near the tv antenna!
I spent a few nice minutes dreaming of Switzerland before following the other Volunteers further up the hill to the house next door, a Massage Therapy business we were going to inspect.
another pic of the Swiss chalet from the other side. In my dreams, I think this is just like the kind of house I'd like to live in (either that or a chalet with dormer pop-out windows in an attic, something few Australian houses have).
This was at Mount Stuart House the first B & B we toured/inspected and were shown through by the owners.
It's 2 storied 1860's property with a lot of history attached to it and which had to be heavily restored by the owners as when it was bought, rainwater used to gush down the walls. Now it's simply magnificent -quite opulent, with about 3 heritage double bedrooms in different but blending colours with tasteful furnishings, all with individual bathrooms (one with spa bathroom)
Downstairs the breakfast room has little round breakfast tables with beautiful inlaid mosaic in green and other colours. There's a beautiful large English style garden out the back and a smaller one in the front.
This leadlight was what really impressed me most - surely original, and in a beautifully sited area - halfway up the staircase.
Ballysagues B & B
One of the later B & B's we toured was in an excellent location, set high on a hill overlooking forest and Daylesford from a huge front decking verandah area.
It's called Ballysagues in honour of a village in France where the family who own the B & B visited once and felt had a similar feel as this place, which they rent as a self contained holiday cottage.
Besides the amazing views, I particularly like the blue and tuscan yellow colour combination, slightly European air, and all the golden wood panelling in the cathedral ceiling of the lounge, which is complete with glass fronted wood heater for cosy winter nights.
After a beautiful mediterranean style meal at Sault Restaurant in Musk (about 7 kms out of Daylesford) it was time to get back on the bus and head back to Daylesford Information Centre.
Sault is a very interesting building: on this side, it's all original, from the late 1800's, but on the other side, the new front extension, it's shaped like a hexagon with floor to ceiling glass windows, looking out down onto a picturesque dam and lavender fields which must look glorious in summer.
