"Bomb Scare Alert !" Chippenham Travelogue by coceng

Chippenham Travel Guide: 61 reviews and 77 photos

In the morning of 9th June 2004, I went to London Paddington Station with Patrick (my friend in London) to take the train to Chippenham; I was really looking forward for this trip which was only my 2nd day in London !
My first excursion around London would start in Chippenham, visiting Malmesbury, Castle Combe & Lacock Abbey...
Patrick bidded me happy journey & left me on the train...
The train passing some places, small towns, big towns...I enjoyed what I saw.

Suddenly, the train stopped, not for a while to change tracks or anything like that but stopping for good, in the middle of nowhere !
First I thought it was okay, maybe the tracks were de-railed or something so we just have to wait for a while...
It's not really for a while until there's an announcement saying that there's a security alert in Swindon station, which was the next station that we should reach...
The passengers looked at each other...most of them smiling to each other & some were just annoyingly making some 'fart' noises !
I looked at my watch...The train officers running up & down the aisle....up & down !
Like they were playing a game or something...I looked at my watch, again.
I asked a passenger next to me, was it normal like that ? She said, "Dunno !"...
I was bored, really bored...because we were in stationary for like 1 1/2 hours !
I glanced out the window & took a snap...(the left photo).

Another half an hour passed, with one announcement after another...Telling us that passengers proceeding to Wales would have to change trains...
Passengers to Swindon would have to take buses...Passengers to Bath & Bristol would take another train, which station to be announced soon.
What about me ? I'm going to Chippenham, which is after Swindon & before Bath & Bristol !?...
I flagged a security officer & asked her about my destination; She said, " We'd figure out something...(with a grin, actually she wanted to smile...)"...
I was bored ***less & took a photo of the passengers (head) instead ! As you can see on the left...

Slowly, the train was moving...instead of moving forward, it moved backwards !
We were told that the train had to go back to the previous station was Didcot Parkway (what a name for a train station...) & everybody must get off the trains & would catch their next trains from there, re-route to their destinations !
In other words, passengers would take other trains to their end destinations, BUT passengers going to Swindon would take buses from Bath station...
What about me ? I'm going to Chippenham !
Can anybody help, purlease !
Anyway, took another photo outside the train...what are those towers ? Where were they situated ?
We reached Didcot Parkway station but the train didn't stop there...Passengers looked at each other.
Another announcenment...something like, no, no...we won't stop at Didcot Parkway but we shall proceed to Reading Station instead.....
I looked at my watch !
(Sigh).

So,...the train continued backward to Reading Station.
I thought that was kinda an enjoyable journey because I saw some nice sights outside the window....
I saw this white horse, like drawn onto a hill...Forgot to take my digital camera out !
Darn ! I shoot the sight anyway...sadly, we can't see the white horse on my photo on the left, just tiny weeny part of it...
On the left photo, if you click it large, you could see the white horse on the left side of the photo,...OR I enlarge it for you lot ! See the photo below...

For us all, I enlarged the above photo so that we could see the white horse on the hill !
Sorry the head is missing but the train was moving faster, I wish it would slow down so that I could include the horse's head !
Does anybody know the area where this photo was taken ?

Finally, we reached Reading Station...There were many people already there, holding their tickets, asking each other the trains that they had to take to go to their destinations.
As for me, I took another photo...I thought it's kinda amusing being in that kind of 'chaotic' situation !
I asked another officer & was informed that I should take the train either to Bath or Bristol...then taking a bus to Chippenham.
Okay then, that solved my 'misery'...
I looked at my watch, "Oh Dear !"....

I took the train (after waiting for like half an hour...) to Bath...which I thought would be nearer to Chippenham than Bristol.
At Bath station, I saw this noticeboard...you can enlarge the photo & read what was written on the notice board...
I went out from the station & looked for the bus to Chippenham; Couldn't find it !
Where ? Where ?...
Get back in the station & asked another officer...
Was told that the train was back to normal schedules !
Oh Dear....
So, I took the train to Chippenham from Bath Station...I looked at my watch ! (Sigh).
Now you are asking why I looked at my watch ?
I had to arrive in Chipenham before noon because I wanted to catch the school buses to some places that I planned to go; In this case :
Malmesbury
Castle Combe
Lacock Abbey
The bus services are scarce to these places & Chippenham is the best place for me to reach those 3 places...
Unfortunately, I managed to go to 1 place only, which is : Lacock Abbey...
Hence, you are in my Chippenham Page now !
If I managed to see Castle Combe & Malmesbury, of course there would many more nice photos that I could bring back from this first trip to England !
End of story...
