Helsinki through my eyes

by Soili - last update: Aug 21, 2004

Tram in Helsinki
Helsinki is the capital of Finland. It's easy to travel there from my hometown Espoo, either by bus or by train.
Helsinki is situated at the Baltic Sea, which makes the climate a little windy. Especially if you're waiting for the bus at the bus stop.
Helsinki is also among the few towns/cities in Europe that have the system of trams still working. During the past few years the public transport has been greatly developed in Helsinki and in the towns around it. At the moment there is a question of connecting Espoo with the underground system in Helsinki.
Ruoholahti, Nokia offices on a cloudy day
Ruoholahti is the one of the western suburbs in Helsinki. The underground station has its final/first stop there as well; note that the harbour called Lansisatama, the Western harbour, lies near the underground station. From the harbour there are numerous ferries to take you to the south, Estonia and Tallinn.
The large office buildings, shining windows and parking areas annexed the buildigns , are the sign of a Nokia country. The cellular phones/mobile phones called Nokia are not Japanese but Finnish - did you know that Nokia is actually a name of a town in Finland?
