Botanical Garden & Dale Chihuly

by rexvaughan - last update: Aug 6, 2005

Welcome to the Garden

Mr. Frog
This guy is near the Japanese Garden and adds a wonderful note of whimsey to this great garden. The combination of art with beautiful botanicals adds to the enjoyment of both.
Something new in the lily pond

What do the fish and frogs think?

The Botanical Garden featured an exhibit of Dale Chihuly's art in the midst of the beautiful landscape. This little pond is just outside the Conservatory.
Tower in the fountain

Count the pieces in this tower

One of the things Chiuly likes to do is towers of these curling glass shapes. This one makes a stunning display in the fountain looking across the lawn to the Conservatory. Guess how many different pieces he has put together to form this one.
First view
This is the first Chihuly you see as you exit the entry gate. I think it looks like yellow waterspouts gone wild or snakes on steroids.
Another lily pond
This pond is below a plaza in back of the Conservatory. I like the addition of color to the water and plants.
Japanese Garden
A couple of places inside I thought the glass artwork tended to compete with the foliage and blooms, but here it adds a subtle enhancement of the ferns and rocks.
Old and new
On the original site of the Garden and Piedmont Park the Cotton States Exposition was held in the 1890's. These large stone planters on the plaza behind the Conservatory are from that exposition. The combination here with a totally different and new element I think is stunning.
One of hundreds

Orchid Center

In the conservatory is an Orchid Center as well as a desert house and a rain forest house. This is just one of tons of beautiful and unusual orchids inside.
