Fishing

by Elly01 - last update: Sep 6, 2004

siganus luridus
One of my favourite hobbies is fishing. All my uncles loved fishing including my dad and obviously this is where it all started. My dad used to go go fishing often on his 'luzzu' (a typical Maltese boat) and also from the Maltese shores and he used to take me with him so I started liking it. Up to day, I often go fishing as it is very relaxing !!! The Maltese islands are filled with some nice spots to go fishing. However it depends on the bait you use, the time of the day or night and the method you use. There are loads of various types of fish to catch even though the amount of fish over the years has diminished due to many factors. This photo is of a poisionous fish my friend caught next to Ghar Hasan ! The actual name of the fish is 'siganus luridus'.
Large Octupus
Scuba diving is very popular around the Maltese islands as there are many underwater caves and wrecks which make good hiding places for fish. However, one can also go snorkling as the sea is very clear. Catching octupus is very common since the seabed is quite rocky. In spite of this, Malta also has some inlets which form bays. Most of these are sandy beaches and are very popular for snorkling. I will try to load some photos of the various beaches!
Local Fishermen

Fishing - Not only a hobby!

In Malta one will find many fishing villages where fishermen keep their 'Luzzi' (a typical Maltese boat) anchored. Two common fishing villages are Marsaxlokk and St.Julians. Once on land, the fishermen prepare their nets for next morning's catch ! After catching the fish they sell most of the fish to restaurants all over the island therefore, the fish is always fresh! Many restaurants around the Maltese islands specialise in fish. There are many Mediterranean fish one can eat amongst them are swordfish and tuna and many others, however around September it is very common for these restaurants and locals to serve at table a type of fish called 'Lampuki'. If you are a fish lover you have to try 'Lampuka Pie' or fish soup - they say its very delicious!
