Saint Petersburg Travel Guide: 3,969 reviews and 6,637 photos
Sadly, summer is not my favourite season in Saint Petersburg. I don't like heat, and right now I'm sweltering in my office behind an 8-foot double glazed window.
But with summer come the balmy white nights that the city is so famous for, and that's when the place really comes to life. The outdoor cafes scattered across the city, and especially on the Gulf, are the place to be.
Autumn is when St. Petersburg is at its most picturesque. Because there is relatively little wind, the trees hold onto their leaves until the very last, resulting in swathes of every shade from red to gold.
At the time of writing, I'm at the beginning of my third winter in St. Petersburg. The start of winter is the worst- frequent temperature fluctuations result in sharp frosts and sudden thaws. We tend to breathe a sigh of relief when winter finally sets in for good and the tempereature stays below -10'C
In spring, everything that fell from the sky in winter thaws, uncovering many other things that fell from other places over winter. Imagine four months' worth of deep-frozen dog turds all defrosting in the space of a few weeks.
