Proud and happy to be Greek - Euro 2004

by AndyRG - last update: Aug 6, 2004

Unbelievable!

Portugal-Greece 0-1, 4/7/2004 (inside "Da Luz")
Greece achieved to be the champion of Europe in football at the Championship that had taken place in Portugal, between 12 June - 4 July 2004. The Greek heroes gave such an unexpected joy to Greeks all over the world, a triumph which will never be forgotten... It brought back memories from 14 June 1987, when Greece was again the champion of Europe, but that time in basketball.
Thank you all so much!

The photo was taken inside the stadium of the final, "Da Luz" in Lisbon, by my brother. I'll always be... jealous of him, he managed to get there after driving more than 40 hours from Athens...
Maria (lovely niece, 13 months old) is proud too!

Every Greek (or feeling Greek)...

In "patrida" or far away, we felt too proud for our origin because of this legendary achievement. It was a historical fact that united us and proved that everything can be done if there is a strong will for it, accompanied by the strength of the greek soul...
This success also came at a right time, a few weeks before the Olympic Games of Athens, to show us and to the world that it's really the country of miracles...
At Omonoia square, Athens

Every square (or street)...

I think that just a few Greeks stayed at these magical nights inside their homes, especially on 4 July. The central squares/streets of cities and villages were full of excited and passionate Greeks.
Euphoria was all around...
Even... horses participated at the celebrations

Paranoia...

Any kind of celebration could be noticed, especially after the final against Portugal on 4/7/2004 (1-0). Don't miss the crazy -but not... violent- Greek fans, if you can have the chance...
Ancient Greeks? "Sikose to, to g...no"

When ancient and modern meet each other...

Prototypal or old fashioned? The sure is that fantasy and craze are characteristic of the Greeks, for more ask the... psychiatrists.
"De stamato na tragoudo..."

"Ellas, Ellas, Ellas"...

Non stop fiesta, till the morning... We don't have this chance... every day, so we tried overdose of music too. Rio of Brazil can be jealous...
Waiting for the Greek "gods" at Kallimarmaro

5/7/2004, the return of the "greek miracle"...

Kallimarmaro (Panathinaiko) Stadium of Athens was full by 80.000 people 4 hours before the arrival of the national football team to Athens again, after spending almost a month in Portugal. I was also there just to welcome the "immortal" players.
About 500.000 -probably more, difficult to count- other people were waiting for the bus of the team all over its route, from the airport till the historical stadium of the first modern Olympic Games (it made 3,5 hours, instead of 40 minutes!)...
They just arrived...

And the night became day...

At the moment they entered Panathinaiko Stadium, numerous bengali lights were like candles in a church... We couldn't breathe well, but who cared? They were back, "dikoi mas" again...
