Tarcol

On the river

Playa Azul
Tarcol Lodge is nestled at the mouth of the Rio Tarcoles on the Pacific Coast, 40 miles west of San Jose. It is strategically located at the entrance to the 12,000-acre Carara Biological Reserve, the most reliable spot in all of Costa Rica to see Scarlet Macaw. The habitat is a combination of tropical lowland forest, gallery forest, mudflats, and open ocean.
We came here by auto from Rancho Naturalista, southeast of Turriaba.
Mudflats

Mud

When the tide goes out it leaves the mudflats. These are on all three sides of the lodge. It would leave the boat high and dry.
We could walk across and go to the beach if we didn't mind getting out feet a little muddy.
White Ibis

Shorebirds

The huge expanse of mudflats attracts hundreds of shorebirds, thousands during migration.
We sat on the patio for hours at a time watching to see what would appear next.
High tide

Croc

At high tide, the mud flats disappear, and the river comes up close to the lodge on three sides. Then you might look out and see a crocodile in the river.

An excellent overview of one of the countries high on my wish list - and now even higher, thanks especially to your descriptions of birds and the turtles nesting
