"Central Station and Steinerschool" Antwerp Travelogue by KenBel

The Central Station is another of my favourite buildings in Antwerp. How would you arrive in a city with more grandeur than by train at the Central Station of Antwerp.

The main building, eclectic and overdone, has many train traveller stand in awe of its magnificence. Bruges architect Delacanserie drew this building as the point of arrival of the oldest Belgian railway line that went from Antwerp to Brussels.

The platforms are covered by a huge iron and glass vault, which has recently been restored. Besides the platform, the vault also covers many of the small diamond and gold shops, which are part of the diamond district next to the Central Station. The huge vault was designed by the architect J. Van Asperen. It is 185 meters long and 44 meters at its highest point. The platform and tracks themselves are elevated. The construction of this elevation together with its decorations and the many little towers alongside the tracks are designed by the same architect

Restoration of the Central Station and the vault, which started in 1993 have recently been completed, but due to the construction of underground high speed train tracks, the station will be a construction site until 2005.

Right next to the Central Station is the entrance to the Antwerp Zoo, one of the oldest and biggest zoos in the world!!!

I love the entrance and the 1856 Egyptian temple which currently houses the giraffes. It was modeled after the 1854 'Egyptian Court' at the Crystal Palace in London. The hieroglyphs symbolize the relationship between the Royal Society of Zoology and the City of Antwerp.

This house, another one of my favourites, is located very near the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts, on the Volkstraat. It is clearly an Art Nouveau house with a lot of merit, especially what I 'm guessing is sgrafitti (no not "grafitti", sgrafitti this is a special painting techique used a lot on Art Nouveau houses) has been preserved beautifully.

Today, this house is the home of one of the Steiner Schools in Antwerp.

Unfortunately, up until today, I have been unable to find info on who the architect was and when it was constructed exactly ...

I'll keep on it though and when I find out, I'll let you guys know!!
