Olympic torch at Canary Wharf On 26th June 2004, the Olympic flame visited London for the first time since 1948, and went on a 48km journey through the diverse boroughs of London. At about 11am Roger Bannister and Tim Henman started off at Wimbledon, and then passed it on to other sports personalities and Londoners who had been specially selected for bravery or outstanding work in sports. Each borough put on celebrations and street parties as the flame passed - Brick Lane even had a full sized robotic elephant!! I set off down to Canary Wharf to see the celebrations there, and the flame itself. There were clowns, acrobatic jugglers, steel bands, jazz bands and in Cabot Square itself were fantastic Gospel singers. |
| Who ordered this weather for the Olympic relay?!?! |
Rain stops play! It drizzled with rain all day, even stopping play at Wimbledon, but that didnt stop the crowds, OR put out the torch!! |
Matthew Pinsent At about 3pm, gold medallist Matthew Pinsent turned up with his entourage, and the flame |
Here he is again... I almost missed the whole thing, because I was standing by the fountain in Cabot Square, but I rushed around and got a couple of pics. After Canary Wharf, other people took the flame up Mile End Road to Brick Lane, round South London, the Millenium bridge, Knightsbridge, the Rowing 8 took it up the Thames, Pippa Funnell rode with it to the Mall, and Steven Redgrave (of course) took it up the Mall and lit the Olympic cauldron. |
Olympic bus The Olympic bus followed the flame... full of people but I have no idea who they are!! |
Pyrotechnics As the flame passed around Cabot Square, they set fire to the fountain in the middle - it took a couple of tries in the rain, but they got there eventually, heehee |
Celebrations Some of the stilt walkers watching the flame.... |
| Concert crowds (got this one from the bbc) |
Concert There was a concert on The Mall at the end of the day that I would have loved to have gone to, but the last tickets were given away the day before and I didnt know about them! It was shown on the bbc though, and looked brilliant - 70,000 people! There are lots of other photos on the bbc website (www.bbc.co.uk) showing the flame being passed, and the concert. |
