Massive Inukshuk! | Me in front of an Inukshuk at Stanley Park |
Text from the plaque to be found at the foot of this statue situated at the southern end of English Bay Beach.
"Ancient symbols of Inuit culture traditionally used as landmarks and navigation aids, this grey granite statue representing a human form with outstretched arms is a well-known symbol in Canada of northern hospitality and friendship.
Constructed originally by Alvin Kanak of Rankin Inlet, this monument was commissioned by the Government of the Northwest Territories for its pavilion at Expo 86, and given to the City of Vancouver.
Permanent location of the Inukshuk on this site was sponsored as a gift to the city in 1987 by Coast Hotels through the Vancouver Legacies Programs.
Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation"
I had to get my picture took here, living in Labrador, Eastern Canada we are very familiar with Inukshuks and my travels in other northern regions like Iqaluit, Nunavut. |
| | Local Artist Here is a local artist on one of the beaches in Stanley Park balancing rocks.
I have more information in my must see activitiy tips but these guys are really good. |
Stanley Park Map At certain points of the park there are maps like this one that can help guide you along but the walk around is 9 kilometers and you won't find one of these around every corner.
It's a good idea to get a map from the Internet or at the park entrance to help guide you around without any doubts in your mind of where your going.
| | Prospect Point Busker There is a lot of activity at Prospect Point. Here is a local busker adding to the atmostphere at the lookout point. |
9 O'Clock Gun This gun is a naval type twelve pound muzzle loader. Cast in 1816 at Woolwich England. It was brought to Vancouver about 1894. The crests of King George III and of the Earle of Mulgrave, Master General or Ordnance are on the barrel.
Gun restoration and pavillion were centennial gifts in 1986 to the city of Vancouver from corporate donors.

cjanzen Fri Oct 23, 2009 21:50 UTC So you were uncomfortable witnessing a gang sexual assault on a woman? You need to critically examine your privileged position and how that allows you to cast your gaze upon those who, living in the public arena of the streets, have no means to avert it. | rach1987 Thu Jan 8, 2009 21:47 UTC First off, you have no compassion and that I think that it is pretty appaling that you would write something like this. Even though you may not think it but those people are people just like you and me and im glad they made you feel umcomfortable. | Katsumo Wed Dec 31, 2008 16:23 UTC You should getcher funky white ass over to the "other" side of the tracks once in awhile and learn something about the world you live in and about systemic, institutionalized poverty and racism dude. It will give you a little more character... | mcleank900 Fri Sep 12, 2008 09:24 UTC I wonder why a tourist in any city in the world would venture down a back alley to photograph homeless people and post it here?? |
