Through the bamboo to the gorillas

by Maggus - last update: Jun 28, 2004

on it goes

On our way up the mountain

Yes, one definitely needs a machete to fight yourself through the bamboo. Very Camel Trophy-like...;-)

Look closer...

This was the first of the apes who we reached after about half an hour. In general they don't bother much when humans arrive just follow their daily business.
The distance told in the briefing by the guards was continuously violated by the gorillas, so that one came very close to them.

Relaxing Gorilla woman

The light just fell through the leaves and beautifully enlights her face.

Close up

Looking into the camera. It is very interesting to see the different faces and the similarity to humans. The monkeys each have different marks or imprints above their nose which helps the guardsd to differentiate them.

Mother and child

Family foto with the infant.

The leader of the pack

Male Gorillas are quite intimidatingly big once you get near to them. About 2,5 m tall and a massive torso. This one here feels that we are approaching.

The so called Silverback

Each male Gorilla gets this grey haired body by the time he is mature.

Another Lady having second breakfast

The gorillas sleep high up the bamboo trees so that they hear each one approaching through the coppice. A natural alarm device.
