Saguaro Cactus in the Superstition Wilderness
Well, today I felt like a ride. My skin got red enough hiking yesterday at Spur Cross even with sunblock on. (See Cave Creek) Well to be honest, I really was in a hiking mood, but I figured take the road and if I ended up at a hiking area... well so be it! ;-) I took Baseline Road in Phoenix as far as it went to the east and actually it did go quite a ways, all the way out to Apache Junction! Eventually it forced a left turn and brought me up to Rte 60. So I figured why not, and turned up onto the highway. I passed a few housing developments (Yes, they are even building that far out!) and got some great views of the mountains of the Superstition Wilderness. The scenery became very picturesque as I appoached Florence Junction (Rte 60 & Rte 79). There were loads of teddy bear cholla with purple mountains in the distance so I had to pull over and take a few pictures. ;-) The saguaro cacti are the really tall ones for those who don't know.
Cholla in the Superstition Wilderness
Now this picture featues some of the cholla in the foreground. The spiky green one is called a spikehorn cholla and the fuzzy ones are teddy bear cholla. Though contrary to the name, they are just as sharp! ;-)
