Starting at Lake Roosevelt

This pretty sky blue suspension bridge is at the intersection of Rte 88 and Rte 188. It is the longest single span suspension bridge in the US. It spans the outlet of Lake Roosevelt as it empties out the Roosevelt Dam into the Salado(Salt) River.

The high side of the Roosevelt Dam. This dam is the tallest (300' tall) of the masonary dams in the world. It was actually made of brick back in 1911.

After a short drive along the paved road which twisted down from the other side of the dam, I arrived at Roosevelt Inspiration Park. It has a parking area and a sidewalk for some decent views. The road itself though wasn't great. it was like someone paved wherever they found room enough to do so, so the outline of the road curves to and fro rather than an even 8 meters wide. In the corner there was an old bridge that didn't look very wide, so I was glad that they had a new bridge. Little did I know there was more to come!

Well I saw a sign saying that there was construction ahead and the road turned to dirt. No big deal right? I'm used to driving dirt roads being from Vermont. Um well I was expecting it to be a slightly better dirt road then it ended up to be! I mean we graded better roads than this one in the middle of nowhere in the Kuwaiti desert! We're talking one lane twisty road with steep grades and washboarding. So you hit the brakes and keep bouncing down toward the blind turn ahead. Did I mention I was in a car and most of the opposing traffic was large trucks hauling boats? Apache trail does allow access to some to some rather remote and thus uncrowded lakes in AZ.
