Old West School

The Old West School is a log cabin built about 1820 which is sited in the middle of Uniontown on Main Street. This picture which I took from the car shows it is just past the Marathon gas station.

It was closed when we went by, but the sign said it was a historic landmark, and there was a plaque on it.

Further west on Main Street, the White Swan apartments for the elderly perpetuate the name which first appeared on a tavern in 1805.

In the same vicinity, on Main, is the VFW Home, site of the birthplace and boyhood home of General George C. Marshall

Methodist Cemeteries

This cemetery at Peter and Arch Streets. (Part of historic district) dates back to 1791.

There's another cemetery - the Old Settlers Public Cemetery - at North Pennsylvania and Bailey Avenues

Great Bethel Baptist Church

First United Methodist Church in Uniontown is apparently the oldest church in town. It was first built in 1804 and was rebuilt in 1861, but I do not seem to have a picture of it, although I have the Presbyterian church, the Episcopal church, and this Baptist church.

Great Bethel Baptist Church at 47 West Fayette Street was built in 1902 in Gothic Revival style. This congegation descends from the first organized church of any denomination west of the Allegheny Mountains, founded in 1770.

Trinity Presbyterian Church

Trinity Presbyterian Church is at Fayette and Morgantown Streets. It was built in 1894 in Richardsonian Romanesque architecture featuring round stone arches, intricate stone carvings, tall center tower and seven Tiffany stained glass windows. The picture was taken from the car and a picture of the tower from another photo was inset.

This was the home church of J.V. Thompson, Uniontown's leading coal baron - the same one who built the Fayette Bank Building.

The church dominates the skyline as you drive east on US 40 into Uniontown. It reminds me of some churches in Baltimore, and also of the architecture of some buildings in Oberlin where I went to college.

There's another picture of it in the Intro to Uniontown.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church

St. Peter's Episcopal Church was the home church of General George C. Marshall. It was built in 1884 at 60 Morgantown Street in 14th Century English Gothic style. it features a Norman tower without a spire, an intricate patterned slate roof, and one Tiffany window.

Another church of which I did not get a photo is the Asbury United Methodist Church on South Beeson Avenue. Dedicated in 1919, and built of Hummelstown brownstone, the church features Tiffany stained glass windows. This congregation descends from the first Methodist church in Uniontown, founded in 1785..

Fayette Bank Building

Part of the Uniontown landscape is the 11 story yellow brick Fayette Bank Building, with its unique "round corner." It was built around the turn of the century by coal baron, J.V Thompson.
