The San Juan Mountain Scenery | Traveling Along the Durango and Silverton RR |
The best way, in my opinion, to see the scenic San Juan Mountains is to take the Durango and Silverton Railroad. On this trip, we saw some of the highest and most rugged peaks of the Colorado Rockies. On this train trip, I took well over 150 pictures. That should explain how special this is. In this first picture, here is a picture of one of the higher peaks with the Animas River in front of it. |
| | One of the first Views of the Mountains This is one of the first views of the San Juan Mountains when going from Durango to Silverton. It was just a preview of what was to come. |
| Waterfall near Silverton, CO |
| | Waterfalls There were plenty of waterfalls along the journey. This particular waterfall is just right outside Silverton and is probably the most spectacular one. |
| | Animas Gorge The Animas Gorge was about 1 1/2 hour into the excursion from Durango. The train passes through a narrow gorge through the Animas River. The drop off here was well over 500 feet. Here is a whirlpool I found on the Animas River in the gorge. |
| | Whitewater Country The Animas River is definitely whitewater country. One of the fastest moving rivers I've seen. |
| | How would you like this view? Here is a great view of the San Juan Mountains from the window of my train seat. |
| | Another Mountain View for Good Measure These mountains are absolutely spectacular. |
| | Majestic Peaks Here is a fitting end to this page of the travelogue. |
