Cajun-Zydeco Festival

by where2next - last update: Jun 13, 2004

One of the reasons I began to look around for festivals was to experience different cultures without leaving New England. Cajun-Zydeco was such an occasion. Of course, Cajun and New Orleans is well known, though Zydeco is less so. The music is unique - especially with a Washboard musician! The band also had an accordian player.
The festival consisted of mainly two tents - one for Cajun music and the other Zydeco.
Back at the Zydeco stage folks were taking dance lessons. Previously I had watched folks dancing and really couldn't figure it out. Couples stayed pretty much in the same spot and more or less jumped up and down.

Later in the evening, I did get asked to dance on a few occasions and learned the general steps. Basically, one does stay on a certain location and the steps go 1-2-3-hold (or kick), that is moving the feet left-right-left-and then hold.
Another photo of the Cajun tent. The dancing in this tent was more of a waltz or like Country & Western dancing were folks danced around the floor.
There were just a couple vendors.
Not really that many food options - I had the blackened fish with sweet chips. The former was pretty good.
The place were the festival was held was called Strawberry Park. It wasn't really a campground as there were mini-houses around that were equipped with cable and internet.
