Petra-Lost City of Stone

Stone Carving from Petra
A special exhibit of artifacts from Jordan's city of Petra is being held from October 18, 2003 to July 6, 2004. It is an in depth view of the history of the city, with video footage, statues, jewlery and some of the amazingly detailed carvings that adorned the buildings there. After reading a lot about this magical place from the lucky Vt'ers who have been, I was excited to see a little of it close to home. It will just have to tide me over until I can see the actual place for myself!
T-Rex

Saurischian Dinosaurs Room and 4th floor

The 4th floor of the museum is home to the dinosaurs, or what is left of them anyway. Large rooms display the skeletons of these amazing creatures. Also "living" on the 4th floor are ancient turtles, wooly mammoths and saber toothed tigers.
For a better place to eat than the downstairs cafeteria, try the cafe on 4th. When we went, they had tasty middle eastern cuisine such as falafels, hummus, and cous cous. I believe the menu changes though as this was the menu at the time of the Petra exhibit, right across the hall.

Northwest Coast Indians Room

For some reason, nothing brings back my childhood memories of this museum as much as this room does. I think we might have used it as a gathering spot for the class... It's located on the 1st floor, right in front of the IMAX theater. Totems poles and large carvings dominate the room. Definately worth seeing!
Blue Whale

Hall of Ocean Life

Ah the famous "whale room". After a huge renovation, this hall was recently reopened. Known for the giant replica of a Blue Whale suspended from the ceiling, the Hall of Ocean Life is an educational look into the deep blue waters of the sea.

Frogs-A chorus of Color

A special exhibit open from May 29, 2004 to October 3, 2004, a chorus of color is a wonderful look at frogs from around the world. A walk through the exhibit will take you past many tanks housing all kinds of frogs, from Poison Dart frogs to giant African Bullfrogs, to tadpoles just sprouting their backlegs!

I'm not fat, just big boned
In June, my sister and I went into New York City to the Museum of Natural History. Among the many things we saw was the amazing exhibit "Frogs-A Chorus of Color" Over 200 frogs of all shapes, sizes and colors. All these little guys came to the big city from VT member PA2AKgirl's hometown of Lewisburg. Thanks Clyde Peeling's Reptileland!

I guess I'm a bit like you Amy - I visited so often on business that I never really had time to look around properly! However, I agree with Lou - Times Square is a 'must see'! Very helpful tips here for my next 'tourist' visit!!

Very informative NYC page, Amy. The Big Apple has become one of my favorite places in the last couple of years. I can't wait for my next visit. : )
