Lastovo, with its 46 small islands and surrounding sandbanks, is a genuine heaven for fishing lovers who angle for tuna and other trophy fish. There are also 46 churches on the island, some of them originating from ancient times. The very name Lastovo came from ancient times too, first known as Ladesta form early IV century B.C. The Romans named it Augusta Insula, meaning The Emperor’s Island. Later the name was changed into Ladeston and finally Lastovo.

The Island of Lastovo is a South Dalmatian island pointed far into the sea. There are ship and ferry-boat services to Split, Korcula and Dubrovnik.
The island is encircled with numerous islets of natural attractions. Its landscape is characterized by vinyards, olive groves and chimneys.

The largest town on this island of ancient pine woods is Lastovo, a nice example of a Mediterranean hillside settlement. The houses were built one above the other giving everybody the right to sunshine, air and a view.

The parish church of St. Kuzma and St. Damian in Lastovo was built in the Gothic and the Renaissance style with belltowers. Around the church is a fortified wall and tower. Above the place there are the remains of an old castle and the small tower. The Racva cave (a geomorphological phenomenon), Saplun, Skrivena luka, the Zaklapatica bay, Lastovcici or Donji Skofi and the Great and Small Lakes linked with the Pasadur passage, 10 m long, are worth visiting.
Local national costumes are especially picturesque.

Among all the beautiful bays, the Zaklopatica bay and Skrivena Luka must be mentioned.

Skrivena Luka also known as Portorus is one of the biggest and the most beautiful bays on the island of Lastovo. “Skrivena Luka” means “Hidden Harbour”, and it’s true that the bay can’t be seen from the open sea.
Skrivena Luka is located on the southern part of the island and is protected from the rough sea and strong winds.

The lighthouse Struga (built 1873.), one of the oldest on the Adriatic sea, is hovering over the bay, reminding us of the old times, when the sailboats and the steamboats were depending on it.

If you can go to small resturants (“konoba”) where meals are prepared in traditional, local receipes and the owner is usually the chef in the kitchen.

In Lastovo go to konoba “Triton” – owner: Tonci Jurica and try “crveni rizoto od sipe” then follow the recommendations of the owner/chef.
