Looking up from the visitor center parking lot. It was a gorgeous morning, about 75 degrees, and we were ready to hit the trail.

Getting started . . . you are surrounded by towering pine trees, which are in turn surrounded by towering mountains. Would you ever guess this is 35 miles from Las Vegas?!!?

As you go, the landscape opens up a little bit. I took this shot on our accidental detour. You can see the snow ahead of us . . .

Looking off in the same direction . . . the sky is so impossibly blue when the air is clear! It makes you think there is still hope for the world.

Guess we won't be going that way . . . not every tree survives the spring thaw, apparently. We marvel at how deep the snow must have been, given that there is still some left in spite of such warm, sunny days.

And in case you think you're alone . . .
Maybe it was just someone's dog, but this was a pretty big track.

Simply awe-inspiring . . .

Here I am with a snow ball and a pine cone . . . VT member Laurion asked me, "If you combine them, do you get a snow cone?"
We crossed this small patch of snow and found the trail again on the other side. (But not before I slipped and got a nicely bruised and bloodied elbow!)

Nice photos. Too bad the hiking didn't go better for you. I'm afraid I won't have any better luck with the snow conditions in November. But at least now I know to be careful about getting lost on the trails. Good tip, thanks!
