Outside of HCMC, beyond the mad glitz, noise and rushing traffic, lies the lush , dreamy landscape of the Mekong Delta.
Yes, the folks here lead a different but interesting life. It must be challenging though, to live in an area that is mostly marshland and forest.
The brown water ways weren't orginally there . It was only when the Nguyen Lords took control of this region, a maze of canals were built to accomodate maritime transportation.
The waterways were crucial to the people living in the Mekong Delta as most of them were farmers and fishermen who need to sell their produce at the local markets.
These folks live right on the edge of the rivers or canals on structures built mainly from coconut wood.
The farmers and fishermen bring their produce to large floating markets like the one you see in the picture.
These markets come with floating restaurants, floating gas stations and cries of buying and selling.

Avoid travelling on cyclos at night was what i was told by the hotel staff. and yes cuchi tunnel was a blast...imagine digging tunnels for 20years.. its really a man made marvel!!
Hi, bpacker, why did these travellers want to travel in cycloes? i would rather travel in Mai Linh taxis when i am going into Ho Chi MInh City for the first time. Chyan
Wrong advice about fake Sinh Cafe. The text on the sign is "Cafe - Sinh to", which means "Coffee - Fruit shake". "Sinh to" is a Vietnamese word, which means "fruit shake". The shop is selling coffee and fruit shake, not a travel agent like "Sinh Cafe".
hey, i am having a grand time planning my trip to Vietnam cos of your blogs. it's awesome! i hope you'll post more! :-)
I really enjoyed reading your stories and tips on HoChiMihn City. I'm going there in mid-Jan 09 wth my sisters & we're looking forward to the trip, esp. the delicious food. We're foodies too!
Thanks for this interesting and funny page, Glen! I visited HCMC 10 years ago and I see Apocalypse is still there; will visit soon, but for 24hours only! I will not be in mood for Oh-la-la Viagra :)))
hello, I got hungry reading your Food tips on Vietnam ... Hope to have some of that wonderful food one day if I manage my first trip to Vietnam! thanks for your tips, Patricia
My friends and I are visiting Ho Chi Minh in June this year, and I'm so excited... reading your page got me even more psyched, this will definitely be one of the guides I'll be bringing with me on my Vietnam trip. Thanks for the info!
Thinking about a trip here later this year, will be back to check out the rest if we decide to go :-)
Fantastic what to do tips - thank you! Am now going to allow more time in Saigon on our way round.
